Homework 12th March

March 12th, 2010

Homework this week is a punctuation activity.  We are currently studying myths and legends in English and the children are to read to story of Androcles and the Lion that we have provided.  They must punctuate it correctly and then re-write it neatly and decorate it.  5 hps will be awarded to the best piece of work in each class. :)   Mrs Clow’s children should retell the story in storyboard form (I forgot to mention  that to my class today – sorry!) and don’t have to re-write it all out, but they must still punctuate it correctly on the sheet.

Maths homework for Mrs Watterson’s maths group is test 17.  Please ensure both homeworks are returned for Monday morning.

In maths we have been looking at time, both analogue and digital.  Although most children are now generally ok with telling the time with an analogue clock some still struggle with digital and are finding 24 hour clock especially difficult.  Please can you help the children to understand time better by asking them what the time is when you are out and about, giving them jobs to do at certain times etc, and pointing out 24 hour clock times where appropriate.  This should really help. :)

I nearly forgot spelling stars!  Big well done to:

  • Ethan
  • Harry
  • Hannah

for three consecutive weeks worth of correct spellings! :) :) :)

Hope you all have a good weekend, see you Monday. :)

Hi all!

Maths homework for Mrs Watterson’s maths group is Test 15 and this in in maths homework books.  This should also be completed by and handed in on Monday.

Spelling stars this week are:

  • Abbie
  • Ollie
  • Ellie

Well done to you all. :)

Please remember to learn the words for your house song and recitation this weekend… it was you homework for the holidays yet some people still don’t know them and you’ll be letting your house down on Monday.

Oh, and don’t forget that as Monday is St David’s Day and Eisteddfod, you can come to school in Welsh costumes and wear a daffodil.  If you do not have a Welsh costume it is uniform as normal please. :)

I think that’s everything – have a great weekend and we’ll see you on Monday. :)

Half term at last! :)

Homework for the half term is to learn the words for our Eisteddfod items and to continue with the story research homework from last week.  Eisteddfod words can be found here: y5 6 recitations and songs.

Maths homework for Miss Price’s group is test 14 and maths homework for Mr Prytherch’s group is a worksheet on area.

Well done to the children this week for their wonderful behaviour in church.  We went to draw the stained glass and the children had a great time. :)   Mr Prytherch’s class were lucky as Mr Roberts (the bellringer) arrived whilst we were there and took the children into the bell tower to ring the bells – it was all very exciting!  Both classes did some beautiful artwork and have come to have a new appreciation for St Deiniol’s. :)

Some pictures of us bell ringing, the Rector Drew Memorial window shining beautifully and us drawing too!

Have a great half term, see you in a week!

Homework 5th February.

English homework this week is to research a Welsh story from the following list:

  • The story of Gelert.
  • The story of Cantre Gwaelod.
  • The story of Elidir.

The children have until February 22nd to complete their research as they will then use their research to help them re-write their chosen story for our Eisteddfod competition.

For this year’s Eisteddfod we will be holding a “Chairing” ceremony for the best storywriter.  The children will be writing the stories as part of their English lessons, therefore THEY SHOULD NOT WRITE THE STORY OUT AT HOME!  All they have to do is find our about the plot, the characters, the setting etc and then compile this as a mind map, picture montage, scrap book etc – any way they choose to display the information they need for writing their version of the story.

The stories are available to read on the internet but we also have copies of them in school for children who do not have access to the internet.  You should also find copies in your local library.

Good luck with your research and we look forward to seeing all of the different ways you choose to present your findings. :)

Maths homework for Mrs Watterson’s group is Maths Test 13 – unlucky for you!  Please complete and return on Monday – remember, for every day your homework is late, you lose 5 mins Golden Time! :(

Next week in maths we are looking at fractions and decimals.  The children love practising these with food (pizza, cakes and sweets work well we’ve found!) so if you can all your children to help you portion up your dinners this weekend it will help them with their fraction work in the week. :)

We had a lovely time on Thursday with Cheshire Jets basketball team. :)   Three players from Cheshire Jets came to school and discussed healthy eating, the detrimental effects of smoking and they also played basketball with the children.  The children were beautifully behaved and (literally!)looked up to  their new healthy role models!  The children were grossed out after seeing the tar from the cigarettes and they enjoyed learning about what to eat in order to be a good sports person!  It was a great afternoon and we look forward to more coaching next Thursday. :)

I think that’s everything for this week! Have a great weekend and remember, only one or less portions of sweets per day… :)

Miss Price, Mrs Watterson and Mr Prytherch.

Homework 29th January 2010

January 29th, 2010

English homework this week is to continue with the presentation homework from last week.  (See previous post)

Maths homework this week for Mrs Watterson’s group is maths test 12 and is in your child’s bag.  Some children have lost their maths homework book.  Please help them to find it if they have lost it, as we cannot afford to keep replacing them in school.  New homework books will cost 50p and you should send the money in to your maths teacher in an envelope with your child’s name on.

Please continue to help your child with their times tables.  Most children have really cracked it this week, but some are still struggling as they don’t have the basic multiplication knowledge.  This is something you need to continually reinforce at home please. :)

Well done to Year 5 for their effort with their cakes – they went down a storm and raised £58.37 so far!

5TW were caught out this afternoon in the snow!  We were doing PE when the heavens opened!  Luckily Miss Price had the camera and here is a photo of us in the snow before we came in to dry off!!!  I’ve put it on at the request of the children who enjoyed trying to spot each other on the photo.

Have a great weekend and we’ll see you on Monday. :)

Homework 22nd January 2010

January 22nd, 2010

Hello all – a full week in school at last!!! :)

Maths homework is on a sheet in maths homework books / in bags.  Mrs Watterson’s group are still doing our mental gymnastic tests and we are on test 11 this week.

Our maths groups have been looking at multiplication this week and Mrs Watterson’s group will be doing so again next week.  We are doing some hard stuff and some of us are multiplying 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers but some of the children STILL don’t know their basic multiplications to 10×10 and this is causing them some problems as they can do the methods we have shown them, but their lack of mental recall of times tables means they are getting the answers wrong even if they are doing the sums correctly. Please help your child learn their times tables this weekend as it will really help them next week.

English homework for the next TWO WEEKS is to prepare for a presentation to be given to the class.  The notes for this can be found using the following link: Year 5 Homework oracy

The children also have a competition entry in their bags to complete.  This is to help create a giant Fairtrade tablecloth.  Please see the letter that they have brought home for further information.

I’m sorry the spelling links on here are broken – they have been reported and I will fix them as soon as possible and you can then access spellings again from home. :)

We haven’t done Spelling Stars for a while, but here they are – better late than never!

Have a lovely weekend all and we’ll see you on Monday. :)
